The Center for Strategic Research at MASA is one of the partners of the European research project Horizon 2020 CONNEKT project – Contexts of Violent Extremism in the MENA and Balkan Societies, which was launched on February 10, 2020 in Barcelona, Spain. CONNEKT is coordinated by the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed).

The project focuses on young people between the ages of 12 and 30 from North Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans. CONNEKT analyzes seven potential factors of radicalization (religion, digitization, economic deprivation, territorial inequality, transitional dynamics, socio-political demands and educational and cultural opportunities) at three different levels of analysis (state, community and individual) to determine their interdependence and special importance.

An interdisciplinary team of 14 institutional partners consisting of universities, think tanks and citizen associations will use innovative methodology and empirical research to develop recommendations, measures and tools for the prevention of violent extremism in the participating countries as well as in the European Union.

The MASA team is led and coordinated by Acad. Vlado Kambovski, prof. Lidija Georgieva is the lead researcher and Dr. Numan Aruch and Naum Trajanovski, MA are researchers. Over the next three and a half years, they will have the opportunity to collaborate with the most important experts in the field and participate in research and development of policies to prevent violent extremism.
