Acad. Leonid Grčev was born on April 28, 1951 in Skopje.
In 1978 he graduated at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. In 1982 he completed his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Zagreb, where in 1986 he completed his doctoral studies and he defended his doctoral dissertation.
In the period from 1978 to 1988 he was employed in the “Electricity Company of Macedonia” in Skopje as a telecommunications engineer. In 1988 Acad. Leonid Grčev was elected a Docent Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, in 1993 he was elected an Associate Professor and in 1997 a Full Professor. From 1997 to 2002 and from 2009 to 2016 he was the Head of the Institute of Electrothermy and since 2003 he has been the Head of the Center for Electromagnetic Compatibility. From 1989 to 1991 he was a collaborator and advisor to the world’s leading consulting and software company for safety in power systems – Safe Engineering Services and Technologies in Montreal, Canada. He was a Visiting-Professor at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany (in May-June 1993 and July 1995), at the University of Uppsala, Sweden (in June 1995) and at the Federal Technical University in Lausanne, Switzerland (in the period from June to July 2002 and July 2005). In the academic year 2002-2003 was a Visiting-Professor at the Technical University in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
Acad. Leonid Grčev is the author and coauthor of over 300 scientific papers, whereas on more than half of the papers he is the first author. According to the treated problems his research papers can be classified into the following groups: development of a new theoretical model, its practical application and verification with experiments, in the fields of analysis of rapid changes (transients) in large and complex electrical systems with particular emphasis on the impact to the country, improvement of the protection against the effects of atmospheric discharges, electromagnetic compatibility and modeling of atmospheric discharges. The papers have been cited for more than 1750 times (according to Google Scholar 06.2016).
One of the major scientific contributions of Acad. Leonid Grčev is the development of, so far, the most accurate model for the analysis of transient electromagnetic behavior of complex systems in layered electrically conductive areas. This field of research is becoming more current and more important for the further development of new technologies, because of the increasing sensitivity of the electronic systems to the impact of the rapidly changing electromagnetic field. The need for protection of these systems, which are the basics of the modern development of the information and communication technology, require increasingly accurate calculation procedures. Acad. Leonid Grčev developed this model in all elements which are necessary for it to be widely applied in the world: he has laid the theoretical basics, he has developed efficient numerical procedures, he has verified the model by comparison in experiments, he has expanded the model to include various elements of the systems, he has connected it with the existing standard software for analysis of large electrical systems and he has developed software for interactive analysis. After many years of work in this field, Acad. Leonid Grčev today is accepted in the world professional scientific community as the founder of a new methodology and one of the leaders in the field. The scientific contributions of Acad. Leonid Grčev in the scientific world are accepted as the major reference in the field and their impact is steadily growing – as evidenced by the growing number of research groups worldwide who apply and develop his method.
The international activity of Acad. Grčev in educational, scientific, expert and publicist area, briefly summarized gives the following image: he has organized and conducted lectures of 5 postgraduate and advanced courses and he has been a co-mentor of doctoral studies at renowned universities in Europe; he was the author, co-author and co-editor of 5 international monographs, he is an author of a paper which is included in the book of selected papers in the IEEE, he has published 43 papers in international journals (to June 2016), he has presented 204 papers at international referenced conferences, he is the editor of two international journals, he has been president and organizer of several international conferences, he has been president and member of the scientific committees of several international conferences; he is a reviewer of papers in top scientific journals; he has been principal investigator and he has participated in over 20 international and foreign research projects, and has been a guest-researcher at 6 renowned institutes and laboratories abroad; he is member of 7 committees and international working groups of CIGRE and CIRED – Paris and he is the co-author of 3 international recommendations in the field of protection of the electrical systems from electromagnetic influences, he is an author of an engineering software which is used today in large companies in the world such as for example, Germany’s Siemens and France’s EDF, as well as in renowned universities in Europe, he is the author of practical solutions for protection against electromagnetic interference in Macedonia, Germany and the Netherlands. In 2013 he was elected a Fellow of IEEE (which is the ultimate acknowledgement at the prestigious and the biggest worldwide technical professional association: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – IEEE), and in 2015 he was appointed a IEEE PES Distinguished Lecturer.
Acad. Leonid Grcev has been a head of more than 50 professional and applied projects for solution of practical problems for protection against the electromagnetic impact in the telecommunication, electromagnetic and facilities for natural gas and oil in the Republic of Macedonia.
He was elected a Full Member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts on 27 May 2009.
