Acad. Gjorgji Filipovski was born on 6th of May 1919 in the village of Sorovich (Lerin region). Elementary and high school completed in Bitola in 1937. From 1937 to 1941 he studied at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (Agriculture Department) in Zemun. He graduated in Sofia in 1942 at the Agricultural and Forestry Department and obtained PhD degree at the Faculty of Agriculture in Zemun.
He actively participated in the progressive student movement before the war and in the National Liberation War immediately after the occupation in the Second World War. From 1942 to 1944 he was assistant professor of pedology of Agriculture and Faculty of Forestry in Sofia. From 1945 to 1947 he was head of the pedological-agricultural department at the Agriculture examinational Institute in Skopje. In 1947 he was elected as a lecturer, in 1949 as a docent professor, in 1954 as an associate and in 1960 as a regular (full) Professor of pedology at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Since the establishment of the Faculty he was the Head of Department of pedology and agrochemistry. In the academic year of 1948/1949 he was Head of the Agriculture Department, in 1949-1950 the vice dean and in 1955-1956 the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. He Lectured at the III degree (PhD) studies on the subject of Meliorative pedology in Skopje and was an adjunct professor at the III degree studies at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in Belgrade. After the catastrophic earthquake in Skopje in 1963/64 and 1964/65 school year he was the rector of the University of Skopje.
He has published over 200 scientific papers and 19 monographs in domestic and foreign magazines. Two monographs have been translated in English in the United States. His works are related to many areas of pedology, the area of geography, genesis and classification of soils, and the field of land reclamation and erosion of soils. His capital work is “The soils of the Republic of Macedonia” in 6 volumes published by MANU. In 2016 was promoted the written study on 250 pages which includes the results of seven decades researches of the soil of the Republic of Macedonia with pedological maps.
As an expert of FAO he was in many countries of Southeast Europe for the process for the creation of pedological maps and as a specialist from our country he was in Egypt in connection with the use of the waters of the Aswan dam for reclamation of saline soils. Acad. Filipovski was on specialization, study stays or attended international and national congresses, lecturing and held presentations in many countries such as: the US, USSR, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Egypt .
Acad. Filipovski was cash awarded by the Government of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia in 1946 and he was awarded with the Order of Labor of III and II degree as well as the Order of Labor with red flag. He is a winner of the state award “11th of October”.
He was a member of the International Society for the Study of soil and vice president and president of the Yugoslav Society for the Study of soils in Belgrade and its Section in Skopje, a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal “Soil and plants” (Belgrade), chief editor of the Annual proceedings of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, a member of the University Council, a member of the Federal Fund for scientific Affairs and of the committee of the Federal Council on the coordination of research activities as well as member of the board of the awards: AVNOJ – “29th of November” (Belgrade) and” 11th of October” (Skopje), and a member of the National Council for scientific work and others.
Acad. Filipovski is promoted as doctor honoris causa (honorary doctorate) at the University of Bradford (UK). In 1973 he was elected as a member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
As a Full member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts he was elected on 18th of August 1967.
