Acad. Ilija Filipče was born on 28th of July 1946 in Ohrid. Elementary and secondary education finished in his hometown and graduated at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje in 1971 and then from 1972 started working on the Clinic of ear, nose and throat at the Medical faculty. He completed specialization in the field of otorhinolaryngology. Even as a specialist candidate he was elected as junior assistant, and then as a regular assistant. In 1987 he defended his doctoral thesis titled “Comparative studies between the techniques and stapedotomy and stapedectomy in surgical treatment of otosclerosis” under the mentorship of Professor A. Andreevski. In subsequent years followed elections as assistant professor, associate professor and Full professor of the same subject at the Medical Faculty. He is elected as teacher at the School of Speech Therapy and Phonyatry at “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University and the School of Nursing at the University “Ss. Kliment Ohridski “in Bitola.
He realized study and specialization stays in many famous specialized centers for certain subtle areas in the otorhinolaryngology: Clinic in Zagreb at Acad. Padovan and later at Acad. Krajina where he devoted to the paranasal sinuses surgery, frontal bazal injuries and phonosurgery; in Paris at the hospital St. Antoine at Acad. C.H. Chouard he intensively worked on the problem of the cochlear implant (artificial ear) and surgery of the inner ear; at the Children’s Hospital Necker in Paris he was working on the problem of congenital malformations of the ear, child broncho-screening and ezophagoscopy; at the University Hospital E. Heriot Lyon at Acad. Martin he perfected reconstructive microsurgical technique of the middle ear; in Béziers, France the most renown otologic specialized clinic he was working on the problem of surgical treatment of deafness caused by otosclerosis; at Acad. J. M. Sterkers in Paris, especially improved his skills for improved surgical access through the ear to pontocerebelar corner in the brain and the inner ear canal which is very important for the removal of tumors in that region; surgery of the facial nerve further improved at Acad. Fish in Zurich; on the university otorhinolaryngologic clinic in Prague he was working intensively on the problem of the artificial ear.
As a result of these activities, the adoption of new surgical techniques and knowledge and their application Acad. Filipče developed as an outstanding operator and for the first time in Macedonia introduced new techniques that had not been previously performed.
An even greater contribution is the introduction of his modifications into the interventions that provide more successful operating result, few complications and quick rehabilitation. In its current professional work he has performed over 8,000 operations with no death and no serious and permanent complications.
He has presented and published over 100 scientific papers in national and international journals.
Acad. Filipče participated in numerous World, European and national conventions and was invited lecturer exclusively with their personal papers. He was director of the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology, and Minister of Health in the Government of the Republic of Macedonia.
As a Full member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts he was elected on 27th of May 2009.
