Acad. Momir Polenaković was born on 26th of April 1939 in Skopje. He finished medical school in Skopje in 1963, where he was awarded as the best student at the University “St. Cyril and Methodius”, Skopje. He completed his specialization in internal medicine in 1969. In 1977 he defended his doctoral dissertation on “Clinical evaluation of pathological immune originations in the renal glomerules”. As a full professor he was elected in 1988. Acad. Polenaković has worked on the Nephrology Clinic at the Medical Faculty, and from 1990-1997 he was director of the Department of Nephrology. In 2005 he retired from these posts.

During 1972 and 1973 he was on a professional training in the United States as a scholarship student of IREX. Most of the time he spent working at Northwestern University in Chicago at the Department of Medicine, Renal Unit and Department of Pathology. As a fellow of the World Health Organisation (WHO) he stayed at the university nephrology clinics in Sweden, Germany and England. He was visiting professor of the Fulbright Program in USA 1991/1992 year.

Acad. Momir Polenaković has applied experiences gained in the world in our country, as well as he has announced and spread our knowledge in the country and abroad in more than 535 published scientific papers, of which 200 works are on Pub Med, and also 250 abstracts with which he participated in scientific and professional meetings in the country and the world. He edited and published five books of abstracts of scientific congresses and meetings. Acad. Polenaković is the author of the book “Nutrition in patients with renal insufficiency and dialysis”, 1997; and co-author (with Acad. I. Dejanov and P. Dejanov) of the book “Infections hemostatic disorders and antibiotic therapy in patients on hemodialysis” 2004; and also he is the editor of the book “Renal Failure – the Facts”, InTech, 2012.

Acad. Polenaković is editor and member of editorial boards: Editor in Chief: Contributions, Department of Medical Sciences, Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (2002); Assistant editor (Associate editor) of the journal BANTAO; Member of the Editorial Board: Actual Nephrology: Kidney Foundation, Varna – Bulgaria; Aktuality v nefrologii (Current concepts in nephrology), Czech Republic; A former member of the editorial board: Macedonian Medical Review, the journal of Nephrology, Dialysis, Transplantation (NDT- official journal of the European Renal Association), and the journal JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association); Yugoslav edition.

Acad. Polenaković is active in the study of: glomerulonephritis, intersticionefropathies (Balkan endemic nephropathy), urinary tract infection, invasive and non-invasive diagnostics nephrology, renal transplantation, plasmapheresis. Acad. Polenaković for the first time in our country has introduced the obtaining renal tissue by percutaneous renal biopsy and allows investigation of fresh kidney tissue obtained with immunochemical methods. He has given the classification of glomerulonefritits in Macedonia. Since 1965 Acad. Polenaković participates in the treatment of acute renal insufficiency with hemodialysis, and since 1971 in the treatment of chronic renal insufficiency with intermitent hemodialysis. He has introduced for the first time the recombinant treatment with erythropoietin on renal anemia at patients treated with dialysis. In 1977 he participated in the the first performance of renal transplant at the Medical Faculty.

Acad. Polenaković held several lectures on glomerulonephritis, Balkan endemic nephropathy and the treatment of chronic renal failure in several institutions in the country and abroad (London, 1977 and 1983, Leiden, 1989, Belgrade, 1982, 1983, Zagreb, 1983, Ljubljana, 1985; Chicago, 1992; Houston, 1992; Los Angeles, 1992, Washington, 1992; Charleston, 1992; Bethesda (NIH), 1992; Dayton, 1995, Bologna, 1997, Izmir, 1999, Aachen, 1999, Thessaloniki, 2001, Sofia 2004, Berlin in 2005 and Split, 2006; Abbey, 2006; Chisinau 2007, Belgrade, 2007; Brač, 2008, Brioni, 2008; Ljubljana, 2008; Milan, 2009).

Acad. Momir Polenaković actively participates in the work of the Macedonian Medical Association. He is the founder and president of the Macedonian Society of Nephrology, Dialysis, Transplantation and Artificial Organs (1992-2011). Also, he is the initiator for the establishment of the Balkan nephrology Association (BANTAO) in 1993. He is a member of several international organizations and associations, such as: European Dialysis Transplant Association-European Renal Association, International Society of Nephrology, International Society for Artificial Organs and others. Since 1992 he is president of the Macedonian Association of Nefrology, Dialysis, Transplantation and Artificial Organs, and since 2011 he is its honorary president. Since 2011, Acad. Polenaković is chairman of the ethics committee of MASA, and from 2014 he is the first president of the Macedonian Association of Medical Editors.

He has won several awards, including: the Order of Merits for the People with Silver Star, “Dr Trifon Panovski “(Charter 1988). By the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) of USA he is awarded as a Distinguished International Medial for 1997, that is the highest prize awarded by the NKF to nephrologists who are not residents of the US, for outstanding scientific achievements in nephrology and work in the development of nephrology in their country, Prize of the City of Skopje – “13th of November” for outstanding achievements in health protection field of nephrology (2005), Silver medal of the first order “Chairs medal of the Macedonian Orthodox Church” on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of restoration of the Ohrid Archbishopric and 40 of the autocephalous Orthodox Church (2008), State prize of the Republic of Macedonia “11th of October” for lifetime achievement in science and education (2009) and others. In 2013 he is the winner of The 2013 Pioneer Award Eastern & Central Europe region of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) for achievements in the field of nephrology for the region of Eastern and Central Europe.

Acad. Polenaković in 1994 was elected as a foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a member of the “Kidney” Foundation in Varna, Bulgaria. In 1996 he was elected as member of the Academic Association of Medical Interdisciplinary Studies, Romania (Academic Association of Medical Interdisciplinary Studies). For associate member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Serbian Medical Association he was elected in 1998, and in 2002 was elected in the New York Academy of Sciences (USA) and the same year for a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Croatia. Also, in 2006 he was elected a member of the World Academy of Art and Science (San Francisco, USA) and a member of the European Academy of Sciences (Salzburg, Austria). Since 2007 he is a member of the Society of Science of Berlin “Leibniz” (Germany).

As a full member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts he was elected on 26th of June 1997. In the period 2004-2007 he was its vice president. Since 2011 he is Head of the Research Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology “Georgi D. Efremov ” at MASA.
