Taki Fiti was born in 1950 in Kruševo, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He graduated at the Faculty of Economics at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje in 1973. In 1974 he was employed as an Assistant Professor of Political economy of capitalism at the Faculty of Economics, at the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje. He finished his master studies in 1980 and his PhD in 1983, on the parent faculty, on the topics of economic development of developing countries. He was elected a Docent in 1983, an Associate Professor in 1988, and a Full Professor in 1993. For the second time, he was elected a Full Professor in 1998. Today, at the Faculty of Economics he teaches the fundamental economic discipline – Principles of economics and the discipline of Entrepreneurship. For a certain period, at the Faculty he has taught the discipline – Development of the economic thought. He was head of the Master Studies for Economic Development and International Finance at the Faculty of Economics in Skopje. On the master studies of the parent faculty he teaches: Modern macroeconomic conceptions and policies; Social policy and labor market in the EU; New opportunities and entrepreneurship; and Managerial economics.
He was elected a Full Member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2003. Within the Academy, he was a member of the Presidency, Secretary of the Department of Social Sciences and Head of the Centre for Strategic Research.
He was elected a President of MASA on 30 November 2015, with a function since 1 January 2016.
Basic fields of his scientific occupation are: economics (microeconomics and macroeconomics), economic growth and development and entrepreneurship. In the last twenty years his scientific interest has been focused on the complex topics in the area of the modern macro-economic science – especially the modern macroeconomic schools and macroeconomic policy (fiscal and monetary).
Acad. Fiti is a scientist and researcher with a large opus of scientific papers. He is author or co-author of about 300 scientific and specialized papers, research projects, articles, books, studies, monographs, etc. In the majority of the published papers (domestic and foreign) he is the first author. His works have been written in Macedonian, Serbian-Croatian, English and French, and have been published in domestic and international journals.
Taki Fiti has authored or co-authored more than 30 books. Some of these books in which he appears as a co-author are published abroad in renowned foreign publishing houses – Kluwer Academic Publishers (USA – UK), Kumarian Press (USA), Access Press (UK), Springer (USA, UK), etc. It is particularly significant and highly evaluated his contribution to the research of the modern macroeconomic schools that constitute the core of today’s macroeconomic science and their relevance for conceptualizing the key macroeconomic policies – fiscal and monetary. His five books in this field, published in the period after 2001, Contemporary macroeconomic conceptions and policies, New microeconomics and government regulation, Nobel prize winners in economics from 1969 to 2008 (editor and author), Phenomenology of the economic crisis – the contemporary business cycles and countercyclical policies, Keynesian economic philosophy – from Keynes till today, played an important role in the transfer of knowledge from the modern macroeconomics, but also in conceptualizing the macroeconomic policies in our country.
Acad. Fiti, as a leader, author or co-author participated in the preparation of around 30 research projects of which 10 are international. Acad. Fiti’s engagement in the preparation of numerous research projects, as a leader and author, also have a significant impact on conceptualizing the macroeconomic policies, government regulation, policies for supporting entrepreneurship in the Republic of Macedonia. In this context, it is important to note that Acad. Fiti was co-president and co-author of the Blue Report for Republic of Macedonia – Blue Ribbon Commission Report (Macedonia) Towards Dynamic and Sustainable Economic Growth – growth supportive policies, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Team Leaders: Josef Brada and Taki Fiti, Skopje 2006.
His reviewers (Academicians Bogoev, Kljusev and Uzunov) specifically point out that the “high value of the largest number of published papers in regard to the subject, methods, analysis and validity of conclusions” is a result of his extensive economic education, continuous monitoring of the latest trends of the microeconomic and macroeconomic science, his numerous study stays (Italy, Germany, France, Great Britain and others) and his numerous appearances on national and international scientific conferences, congresses, consultations etc. (in the university centers of the former Yugoslavia, in Paris, Nantes, Rennes, Wolverhampton, Lausanne, Berlin, Washington, Sofia, Bucharest, Kiev, etc.).
In the field of the higher education in our country, Acad. Fiti is the founder оf the fundamental scientific discipline Principles of economics and of the scientific discipline of Entrepreneurship. Taki Fiti is the author of the first modern university book in Macedonian – Principles of Economics (five editions). His book Entrepreneurship (three editions) is the first in this field in the Republic of Macedonia, prepared in co-authorship with Verica Hadzi-Vasileva Markovska and Milford Bateman. On 24 November 2015 Acad. Taki Fiti was named the best University Professor in the Republic of Macedonia.
In the field of professional activity it should be noted that acad. Taki Fiti, on invitation by various institutions, authorities and organizations, actively participates in the state, legislative and other activity of general interest for the country.
Acad. Taki Fiti was:
- Member of the working group for the preparation of the economic part of the new Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia;
- Longtime President of the Association of Economists of Macedonia;
- Coordinator of the working Group of the Republic of Macedonia for succession of the Federation property (former SFR Yugoslavia) and its representative in the EU Commission in Brussels;
- Dean of the Faculty of Economics;
- Minister of Finance in the Government of Republic of Macedonia;
- Member of the editorial boards of three international journals with impact factor;
- Consultant to the OECD, Paris, for projects for small and medium enterprises in Republic of Macedonia;
- Advisor to the Macedonian prime ministers and governors of the National Bank etc.
Acad. Fiti is a member of the European Society of Culture (Société Européenne de Culture) and Visiting-Professor at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb. Since 2017 he has been a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
