Biography

Acad. Vlado Kambovski was born on January 5, 1948 in Bitola, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He graduated from the Law Faculty in the academic year 1969/70 as the best graduate student in several generations. On November 15, 1970 was accepted as a trainee, and on 1st of March 1971 he was elected as assistant at the Department of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law in Skopje.

During 1971 and 1972 he was sent to practice in the Municipal and District Court in Skopje and in the academic year 1972/73 he enrolled in graduate studies in criminal law (guideline for scientific development) at the Law Faculty in Zagreb. Studies have been completed with great success and in May 1975 he defended his master’s thesis: “Voluntary renunciation of committing a crime“.

In 1977 he was elected lecturer and held lectures in criminal law at law schools in Skopje and Bitola and the Faculty of Security in Skopje. In 1980 on the Law Faculty he defended his doctoral dissertation titled: “The issue of the omission in criminal law“. That same year he was elected assistant professor in the subject criminal law, then Dean of the Faculty of Security, which duty he performed until 1984.

From 1984 to 1986 he was director of the Institute for Sociological, Political and Juridical Research in Skopje. In 1986 he was elected Vice President of the Executive Council of the Assembly of SRM and from 1989 to early 1992 he was elected to the Federal Executive Council and Federal Secretary for Administration and Justice. From December 1998 to December 1999 he was the Minister of Justice in the Government.

While the performance of these duties Acad. Kambovski have also regularly performed his professorial duties at the Law Faculty. As a Full professor at the Law Faculty he was elected in 1992 and re-elected in 1999.

Besides lectures on regular studies, Acad. Kambovski also lectures postgraduate studies in Criminal Law and Criminology on the Faculty of Law, served as a mentor of several candidates for Master’s theses and doctoral dissertations. Managed or participated in several research projects at the Faculty of Law, Institute for Sociological, Political and Juridical Research and MANU. He directed the mega-project of the Faculty of Law “European Integration of social, political and legal system of the Republic of Macedonia”. Acad. Kambovski participated with his papers in many national and international scientific meetings. As Professor of Law, starting in 1995 he headed the working group that prepared: Criminal Code, the Law on Misdemeanors, Law on Courts, the Law on Prevention of Corruption, and participated in the work on other laws. Ha have been engaged in several activities of the Council of Europe, particularly as a member of the expert group working on the statistics of crime trends in the European countries.

He was president of the Forum for Euro-Atlantic integration of Macedonia and the Republican Association for Criminal Law and Criminology.

The main scientific preoccupation of Acad. Kambovski is criminal law and philosophy of law. The most significant results of his scientific commitment is the entire system of criminal jurisprudence presented in his capital work Penal Law – general part, the most voluminous and most thorough scientific study in Macedonian criminal legal literature. His second major work Penal Law – special part, is the only full scientific processing of the system of incrimination in the Macedonian criminal law literature. Philosophical and legal thought of Acad. Kambovski is integrally presented in his work “Philosophy of Law“, published in 2010 as the first and so far only philosophical and legal system in our country, as well as other articles and papers at national and international conferences on philosophical and legal topics.

Despite these important works, he also published about 40 books and more than 350 scientific papers and abstracts and participated in more than 40 conferences and meetings in Macedonia and abroad. Acad. Kambovski is the author of several schoolbooks in the field of criminal law, published in several languages.

Acad. Kambovski was elected as a foreign member of Academy of Sciences and Arts of Republic of Srpska, Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in 2013. In 2012 he was elected member of the European Academy of Sciences in Salzburg and a member of the World Academy of Art and Science in the US, and foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences elected in 2015.

As a full member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts he was elected on 10th of May 2006. From 2008 to 2011 he was vice president and in the period from 2012 to 2015 he was president of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He is currently Head of the Center for Strategic Research MASA.
