Acad. Živko Popov was born on 23rd of June 1950 in Kavadarci. He finished Elementary and high school finished in Bitola and graduated at the Faculty of Medicine in 1976. On the clinics of surgical diseases (Department of Urology) at the Faculty Medicine he has started working in 1977. He is Specialist-surgeon since 1983 when he has completed four year specialization of urology at the Medical Faculty, transplant surgeon is from 1986 when he finished a one-year specialization in transplantation surgery in a university-clinical center Henri Mondor, XII Paris University, France (at prof. Clement Abboue; Prof. Jean Auvert). On 27th of November 1990 at the Medical Faculty at Ss. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje he defended his doctoral dissertation in the field of medical sciences titled: Assessment of reactivity of locoregional tumor lymphadenopathy and role of lymphadenectomy in the diagnostics of urogenital cancer (mentored by Acad. B. Badiev).
Acad. Živko Popov continued his education in Paris, and in 1994 acquired a university diploma for profound studies in surgical sciences (Diplome d’Etudes Approfondies en sciences chirurgicales DEA) of Paris V University Rene Descartes with a written exam and a public defense of the memoir entitled: Evalutions de la proliferation et de la surxpression de p53 dans le cancer de la vessie: Valeur pronostique.
On 10th of November 1998 he defended his second doctoral dissertation in France in the field of surgical sciences (option cancerology), again on the prestigious V Paris university Rene Decartes, UFR Cochin Port Royal on the thesis titled: Marqueurs moleculaires du cancer vesical: valeur pronostique (mentor: prof. D. Chopin). Public defense of the dissertation was evaluated with the highest assessment by the commission that was chaired by the President of the French Association of Urologists Prof. Francois Richard.
He performed clinical practice in several university institutions in the Republic Macedonia, Yugoslavia and abroad. According to the professional activities envisioned by the program and plan for specialization besides on the surgical clinics at the Medical Faculty in 1982 he stayed three months at the Institute of Urology and Nephrology in Belgrade an the Urology Clinic of the Clinical Center in Ljubljana. In the spring of 1985 he went on a several month specialization at Mayo Clinic, Mayo Medical School, Rochester Minnesota, USA (Prof. WL Furlow) where he met with the use of prostheses in urology, impotence, penile surgery, lymph dissections in urogenital cancer, radical prostatectomy and other major surgical procedures.
During 1985/1986 he was on one-year specialization in transplantation surgery at the Paris XIII University Clinical Center Henri Mondor at the renown Professors Jean Auvert, Claude Abbou and Dominique Chopin. In 1986 he also stayed four months at the renown professor Maurice Cames in Centre Medico – Chirurgical Foch in Paris for education in the field of urologic oncology, especially radical cistoprostatechtomies and substitution of the bladder.
From 1992 to 1994 acad. Popov again stayed at Paris XII University Clinical Center and the Center for Surgical Research Henri Mondor at professors C. Abbou and D. Chopin. During this period he conveyed two-year supplementary education in the field of renal and multiorgan transplantation, urologic oncology and research work in the field of immunology of urogenital cancer.
His supplementary education is rich with more short professional visits with main aim to perfection the existing or introduce a new surgical procedures in solving urologic pathology, including the following: Cornell University, New York (1999); University Clinical Center A.K.H. Vienna (2000); Elizabethan University Hospital Linz, Austria (2003); University of Tel Aviv, Israel Clinical Center Sheeba, (2003); University of Bern, Switzerland (2003 and 2006) and others.
His academic assignations have begun in 1983 when he was elected as assistant professor on the subject of Surgery at the Medical Faculty; assistant professor of urologic surgery in the 1985/1986 year at University Hospital Hopital Henri Mondor (Ph. J. Auvert) and Hopital Foch (Ph. M. Camey) in Paris, France. In 1991 he was elected as an assistant professor, in 1996 as an associate professor, and since 2002 has been a full Professor of Surgery at the Medical Faculty. Perennial professional and research stays at the Clinical hospitals in Paris allowed him to acquire a prestigious academic titles at Paris University: University clinical chief of urologic surgery (Chef de Clinique associe aux Universites) at CHU Henri Mondor, Faculte de Medicine Creteil, Universite Paris XIII Val De Marne; invited university professor of urologic surgery (Professeur Invite des Universites) at CHU Henri Mondor, Faculte de Medicine Creteil, Universite Paris XIII Val De Marne, France.
In his hospital assignations he has started as a head of the department of endoscopy at the Clinic for Urology, Faculty of Medicine (1984-1991). From 1992 to 1995 he was head of the department of general urology, and from 1995 to 1999 was appointed as a head of the Department in urologic oncology. He was elected as a Director of the Clinic for Urology in three terms (1995-1997; 1999-2002; 2006). In 1996 he was appointed as a moderator of Surgical Clinics at the Clinical Center Skopje and their coordination director was from 1999 to 2002.
Acad. Živko Popov has published over 70 scientific papers in national and international journals.
For Full member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts he was elected on 27 the of May 2009.
