Acad. Topolińska was born on 2nd of January 1931 in Warsaw. Her father was a historian. She graduated in 1948 in the city of Kielce. She finished her higher education in 1952 at the Social School in Lodz – a group philology, linguistics specialization.
In 1959 she has earned her PhD degree at the Faculty of Philology at Warsaw University and in 1964 she acquired the title of habilitated doctor. In 1974 he became an associate and in 1978 a professor at the Institute of Polish language at the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).
In the years 1954 – 1972 she worked in dialectological center of PAN as phonology and prozodist. Later, the center of her scientific interest becomes grammatical issues analyzed from semantics to form.
In 1972, she was invited by the leadership of PAN to organize and manage the team for the processing of new modern academic grammar of the Polish language (this grammar was published in 1984). From 1973 to 1983 she worked as a head of the Department of Contemporary Polish Language at the Institute of Polish Language at PAN.
In 1967 she was a guest as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago, and in 1988 at UCLA.
In 1958 on International Assembly she met with professors B. Koneski and B. Vidoeski and thus begun her interest in the Macedonian language. In 1969 on the Institute of Slavic Philology at PAN she organized a workshop for processing the syntax of the standard Macedonian language.
In 1983 she moved to Macedonia and worked as a professor – guest of the Department of Slavic Studies on the Faculty of Philology “Blaze Koneski” at the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” on the subject “Grammar of the Polish Language”, and then after on the subject “Introduction of Slavic Studies” which was introduced by her.
As a foreign member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts she was elected in 1976 and as a full member in 1996. Since 1991 she is a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Arts (PAU) in Krakow, and since 1997 foreign member of SANU.
She was one of the organizers of the Research Center for Areal Linguistics (ICAL) at MASA and since its foundation in 2000 until 2016 she ran the Center. In ICAL she is leading the project “The place of the Macedonian language in the Slavic and Balkan linguistic world” and in the Department of Linguistics and Literary Science the project “Grammatical description of the standard Macedonian language.”
Acad. Topolinjska is the author of over 500 scientific publications, among them more than 20 books. She is a member of the editorial boards of several journals for Slavic studies, a member of the Warsaw Scientific Society and the Polish linguistic society. She has won many awards in Poland, Yugoslavia and Macedonia, among others the Order of the Yugoslav flag with golden wreath (1990) and the State Prize of Macedonia – “11th of October” (1989). – She is a member of two committees of the International Slavic Committee (ICC) Commission for study of the grammatical structures of Slavic languages and Slavic Committee atlas. Acad. Topolińska is doctor honoris causa of the “Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University (1997) and the University of Wroclaw (Poland, 2016); in 2016 at the University of Warsaw her doctorate was officially restored after 50 years.
