Corresponding member Aleksandar Dimovski was born in Skopje on 18th of October 1962. He completed his secondary education in high school “J. B. Tito” with a great success and started his high education at the Medical Faculty in Skopje where he graduated in 1987. In the same year he started working as a teaching assistant in the newly established Research Center for New Technologies in the Department for genetic engineering and biotechnology, today’s ICGIB “Georgi D. Efremov” as a first associate of academic Efremov. Then he acquired the post as the senior research associate and became head of the laboratory of the Center. During his work in the Center, corresp. mem. Dimovski had a number of study visits and specializations in the most renowned institutions in the US and the EU including the Department for Cell and Molecular Biology, Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, USA, Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste , Italy, Institute for molecular medicine “Sir David Weatherall” at John Ratkliff Hospitall, Oxford, Brigham and Woman’s Hospital Harvard Medical School Boston, Department for Biochemistry and Department for Immunology at the Stockholm University, Department for molecular medicine of Karolinska hospital in Stockholm, Department of pharmacology at the University of Copenhagen. In 1993 he defended his doctorate at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands, specializing in molecular medicine under co-mentorship of prof. Dr. THJ Huisman from Augusta, USA, and prof. PhD. P. Brombacher in Maastricht, Netherlands. In 2002 he was elected an associate professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University “Ss. Cyril and Methodius ” on the subjects of Molecular biology with genetics, Immunology and immunochemistry with pharmacogenetics, and from 2007 to the present he is a professor of aforementioned subjects. During his 14 years of work at the Faculty of Pharmacy, corresp. mem. Dimovski had pursued the functions of head of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry (2002-2005), Vice dean (2005-2008), Dean (2008-2013) and Head of the Center for biomolecular pharmaceutical analysis (2008) as well as he participated in numerous scientific associations as president of the Macedonian Association of biochemistry and molecular biology, co-founder and vice president of the Macedonian Association of human genetics, co-founder and vice president of the Macedonian Association Pharmacoeconomy and research on the outcome of therapy, a member of the European Society of Human Genetics and a member of the European Federation of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Corresp. mem. Dimovski participated in international committees and working groups as a member of the Committee for biomedical and biomolecular sciences at COST (2004-2014) in Brussels, Liaison officer for Macedonia and member of the Board of Governors of ICGEB, Trieste (2004) and member of the Panel for Biomedicine evaluation of scientific research in Latvia (2013) and in committees and working groups in Macedonia, as a member of the accreditation Board of higher education (2003-2006), a national coordinator for research in the field of medical science in Ministry of Science (2005-2007), vice president of Council for Sciences at the Ministry of Science (2009-12) and member of the Committee for Medicinal Products of the Ministry of Health (2014). He also participated in the drafting of national strategic documents: Program for the development of scientific research in Macedonia until 2010, the National Program for research and development activities in Macedonia (2012-2016), the Strategy for prevention, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of patients with colorectal cancer and the Manual of lung cancer – a guide for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis.
In his teaching and research activity, corresp. mem. Dimovski participated in practical / theory training within the many courses and was a mentor to 5 master thesis and 8 doctoral thesis and participated in conducting the experimental section and advising for the preparation of 6 doctoral dissertations from other institutions. Corresp. mem. Dimovski has done the professional editing and review of six translated school books in the field of genetics, immunology and pharmacogenetics.
Corresp. mem. Dimovski takes part in numerous projects financed from domestic and international sources aimed at research on the molecular bases of inherited cancers, especially colon cancer, as well as to detect prognostic molecular markers to be used in the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of patients with malignant diseases. Remarkable is his scientific contributions in the fields of genetics and molecular biology in particular the introduction of a methodology for molecular diagnosis of hereditary, infectious and malignant diseases in Macedonia, clarifying (part) of the mechanisms of switching in the expression of fetal to adult globin genes and their application in prognosis and therapy of haemoglobinopathies. He is one of the pioneers of research in the field of molecular oncology in Macedonia and its application in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various malignant diseases in the daily clinical practice and founder of pharmacogenetics in Macedonia and one of the main promoters of the introduction of personalized medicine as a new approach in the diagnosis, prognosis, choice of therapy and evaluate the outcome of treatment of disease. His research resulted in the discovery of the genetic basis of familial adenomatous polyposis and hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal carcinoma in our patients, which enabled the establishment of a presymptomatic diagnosis in families at risk of getting the disease.
Corresp. mem. Dimovski is also one of the pioneers in the research of molecular sub classification of colorectal cancers that are particularly important for stratification of the treatment of patients according to the specific genetic profile of the tumor. The findings and experiences of these studies have great importance and are applicative thanks to the efforts of corresp. mem. Dimovski and now are introduced into routine practice for the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer in our country. Experiences acquired in the above mentioned studies were of paramount importance in the establishment of new projects and programs for molecular characterization and other malignant diseases such as myelo and lymphoproliferative diseases, prostate cancer, cancer of the head and neck and lung cancer, in which coressp. mem. Dimovski has a significant contribution as one of the founders of molecular oncology in Macedonia. Perceptible to his pioneering research in the field of pharmacogenetics in our country by which was determined the distribution of genetic variants responsible for the different metabolism of drugs and allows the correct and adequate choice of therapeutic agents with a maximum response and minimal side effects in certain patients. His pioneering examinations in the field of pharmacogenetics are the basis for the introduction of a new approach in medical practice – personalized medicine for whose application corresp. mem. Dimovski is one of the main promoters.
The results of the research of corresp. mem. Dimovski are published in 186 papers with an average impact factor of 3.3 and 1300 times are quoted in international scientific journals.
In 2015 he was elected as a Corresponding member of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
